Learn more about Omega-3 Fish Oil*
Omega-3 fish oils has gained it's claim to fame by the benefits associated with heart and cardiovascular disease. But did you know that omega-3 fish oils have also been shown to lower the biomarkers of inflammation?
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) are the primary omega 3's found in fish oil. These omega's cannot be made in the body. EPA and DHA are found primarily in fatty fish such as anchovies and tuna. ALA is found in plants such as nuts and flaxseed oil.
Omega-3 fatty acids inhibit an enzyme that produces prostaglandin hormones. These hormones are responsible for starting the inflammation process. When a tissue is damaged (sickness, infection, etc) the prostaglandin hormone rushes in and creates the cardinal signs of inflammation; redness, fever, swelling, etc. Prostaglandin also starts the formation of blood clots and contraction of the vessel wall. This is, perhaps, why fish oils have gained in popularity.
